    Questions! (I'm only working on the first part so far) - Should we narrow our mouths to funnel the air? I find it tough to stop my mouth filling up with excess air keeping it relaxed. - Should we work our way down with straw sizes? Should I start with regular straw, or a boba straw, before trying with a narrow juice-carton straw? - Is it typical for lower notes to be more troublesome? I find I'm making the lower notes without making bubbles! - Is it typical for the voice to cut out when vocalising blowing bubbles? Regardless of bubble situation. - Should we concentrate on keeping resonance in the chest, or focusing sound to feel resonance in the lips/teeth while doing this? I find my larynx wants to do all the work. Not sure if you still check these comments but thanks in advance if you do! (Or maybe someone else here has the answers?) :)

    As someone who’s been “using straws” for almost 2 years this blew my mind. I’ve never fully got on with them and found a lot of the time I actually become more strained after using them. Turns out the whole time I’ve been using them incorrectly and making a whole load of volcanos or cutting off the air flow entirely. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in this video 🙏🏻

    So interesting bc someone literally yesterday in this one woman’s vocal class asked “does flaring the nostrils help” & she said “idt so” 😂 and I thought wait I actually think it does.., nasal resonance helps so it very well could

    • @hitomburke
      @hitomburke 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Gary, the goal isn't necessary sustaining phrases or minimizing breathiness (which may occur), the examples here are to assist with reduction of vocal effort. Refer to the Journal of Voice and research on "semi-occluded vocal tract exercises" on why. In Bel Canto terms, this is about reinforcing the reverse megaphone position.

    Okay but should air go out from my nose when doing this? Or should I cut it from the nose?

    • @hitomburke

      Try keeping the air only coming out of your mouth.

  • @maggiecollier1105
    @maggiecollier1105 10 месяцев назад

    This does not seem to be a helpful exercise for singers who experience dysphonia. I did this exactly as prescribed/described yesterday. No volcanoes. And I can’t even produce vibrato today. I have to push so hard to get sound out, and often air comes out instead. I was in much better voice yesterday. I have to cancel my studio session today. My suggestion is to find other more gentle ways to help with dysphonia as this could create more damage even when doing it correctly.

    • @hitomburke
      @hitomburke 10 месяцев назад

      Hi Maggie! If you're experiencing muscle tension dysphonia, first check in with a Laryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor who specializes in voice) and then work with a speech-language pathologist who specializes in voice disorders to help ensure you are doing the exercises in an optimal way. There may be some precursory exercises that will help you. Best of luck.

    Hi Tom - thanks for this Content - I’ve a genuine question: Is there any plausibility.. for American 🇺🇸 speakers to adopt a more “mixed” speaking voice (speaking in a mid range pitch wise- instead of at bottom of speaking range and often into vocal fry) ?

    Very true. I had a friend who would talk for twenty minutes plus without breathing. If I tried to participate, they'd seem frustrated at my interruption. If I said nothing and just listened, they'd apologize for boring me. Then after their long-winded speech, they would try to involve me by asking a question really quickly. My brain would have to quickly change gears, but it was so awkward and not conducive to a nice conversation.

    I think what makes a very interesting story is being able to create a situation where the hero isn't clear and still make it engaging. Life is fantastical in many senses but there are no clear heros, we are all villains in some right and being able to make a protagonist that can scale that level of reality. A "hero" not so much a hero but just a man doing his best in insane circumstances.
